“The Freedom Fund” is proud to announce The Club at Glenmore as the September 2019, “Friend of Freedom” award winner.
The new owners of Glenmore, Damon Devito and David Swales of Affinity Management, provided a free wedding to a local military couple on 9/11. Glenmore invited any recent veteran, active military or first responder couples to enter to win a “LOVE & LIBERTY” free wedding on 9/11. It is their way of “showing a token of appreciation for the men and women risking their lives on the front lines at home and abroad.”
Damon started this event at another property about ten years ago after noticing couples were “reluctant to book a wedding on 9/11 out of respect for those who lost their lives on that tragic day.” However, Damon realized after consulting various first responders and members of the military that “they are proud to celebrate on 9/11 as it signifies freedom and patriotism, and they did not want to let anyone steal that day.” From that calendar vacancy and the sentiment expressed from first responders, “Love & Liberty” was born.
After an essay nomination process, by the couple or others, Damon and his team selected the winners, Michaela and Austin Wilcox who were not able to get married as originally planned due to deployment orders. Damon said “The bride’s mother maintained the wedding gown and bridesmaids’ dresses in her closet hoping for the big day.” That day finally came with the help of Glenmore. Although a bit later than planned, Michaela and Austin were able to celebrate their wedding on 9/11 at Glenmore with the banquet facility and food generously donated by Glenmore. Other vendors in the area followed Glenmore’s lead and contributed to the wedding. Damon commented “it is amazing and inspiring to see other local businesses donate their services or goods for the “Love & Liberty” couple.” Damon says he plans to offer the “Love & Liberty” free wedding again next year on 9/11. Glenmore is rich in other military themed group events and also supports the upcoming Freedom 5K by serving as the start/finish for the footrace which supports military and police organizations in the greater Charlottesville community.
